Do phones need screen protectors?

Modern smartphones have evolved to include durable glass screens, such as Corning Gorilla Glass, which offer improved scratch and drop resistance compared to older devices. However, despite these advancements, screen protectors can still provide additional benefits and may be worth considering. The best type of screen protector depends on your specific needs and preferences.

Benefits of Screen Protectors

  1. Scratch Protection: Screen protectors can help prevent scratches from keys, coins, or other abrasive materials, which can mar the appearance of your phone's screen.

  2. Drop Protection: Some screen protectors, particularly tempered glass protectors, can help absorb shock from drops, reducing the risk of screen damage.

  3. Privacy: Privacy screen protectors limit the viewing angle, making it difficult for others to see your screen when you're in public.

  4. Anti-glare: Anti-glare screen protectors can reduce reflections and improve visibility in bright environments.

  5. Antimicrobial: Some screen protectors include antimicrobial coatings to help reduce the growth of bacteria on your phone's screen.

Types of Screen Protectors

  1. Tempered Glass: These offer excellent scratch and drop protection, and they often have an oleophobic coating to resist fingerprints.

  2. Plastic Film: These are thinner and more flexible, but they may not offer the same level of protection as tempered glass. These can be Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) or Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU). TPU has been mostly replaced with PET, which is generally better.

Choosing the Best Screen Protector

When selecting a screen protector, consider the following:

  • Compatibility: Ensure the screen protector is designed for your specific phone model.

  • Thickness: Thicker protectors may offer better drop protection but could affect touch sensitivity.

  • Material: Tempered glass offers better protection, while plastic film is more flexible and less likely to shatter.

  • Features: Choose a screen protector with features that align with your needs, such as privacy, anti-glare, or antimicrobial properties.

Modern phones may not require screen protectors due to their improved screen durability, but screen protectors can still stop micro-scratches and other impacts. The best type of screen protector is definitely tempered glass, but it may crack after a fall and need replaced. A lot cheaper than a new phone screen, however.
